WORKSHOPS

"In my 10 plus years with the Department, this was the BEST hydrogeology related training that the Department (of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania) has sponsored. -- 1998 Workshop Attendee"

Workshop Sample Topics List
Principles of Groundwater Hydrogeology
Carbonate Geochemistry
Karst (Carbonate Aquifer) Hydrogeologic Problems
Groundwater Monitoring in Karst Terranes
Karst Groundwater Dye Tracing Techniques
Emergency Response in Karst Terranes
Case Studies Dealing with Karst Systems
Geophysical Techniques for Investigating Karst Aquifers
Sediment Transport, Soil Instability and Sinkhole Collapse
Conceptual Hydrogeologic Models of Karst Aquifers
Behavior of LNAPLs, DNAPLs and Miscible Liquids in Karst Aquifers
Toxic and Explosive Vapors Rising into Homes and Buildings from Contaminated Karst Aquifers
Agricultural Waste Lagoons Built Upon Karst Aquifers
Agricultural pesticides and herbicide containers dumped into a sinkhole recharging the karst aquifer.
Sinkhole collapse under a hog waste lagoon allowed nearly 2.5 million gallons of waste to flow directly into the karst aquifer below.
LEFT: Train derailment near Lewisburg, TN allowed thousands of gallons of chloroform and styrene to enter the underlying karst aquifer. Local residents used wells to supply their drinking water.
RIGHT: Chemicals from leaking underground storage tanks were contaminating a spring and a karst aquifer. Water from the spring produced burns on the skin of an environmental consultant.
ABOVE: Explosive levels of gasoline fumes rising from the karst aquifer below closed three classrooms for over two years and threatened to close the school. The fumes were mitigated by locating the crevice the fumes were using to rise from the cave system below and venting the fumes with an explosion-proof fan.
